SAINTS’ WOKINGHAM has been a focal point for Christian worship in Wokingham
for over 800 years. It places great emphasis on its musical tradition which
goes back over 30 years. To ensure the continuity of this great tradition
it has a choir of over 30 singers of whom a dozen or so are trebles. The range of music sung is diverse and stretches from that of the great Tudor composers together with, Latin motets, Lutheran anthems, to many of the composers of the 20th Century, including Tavener, Howells, Britten and Rutter. The choir is affiliated to the Royal School of Church Music, and operates the RSCM Chorister Training Scheme, which provides individual instruction and incentive through a system of tests, badges and coloured ribbons. The choir’s main duty is to lead the Sunday worship, and choristers are expected to attend two Sunday services. The choir practises on Friday evenings: the trebles practise from 6.45 p.m. to 8 p.m. and the adults from 7.30 to 9 p.m. Trebles are paid a small amount of pocket money quarterly, and if they sing at weddings they can earn substantially more! The choir also does a ‘Cathedral Week’ each year during the last week of July. This year (2009) we sang at Derby Cathedral and next year we are due to sing at Llandaff Cathedral. These weeks are enjoyed greatly by our youngsters. As well as singing every day, they are taken out for a variety of trips which usually includes swimming. |
