| All Saints' Church,Wokingham has
a choir of over 30 core and associate singers, of whom eight are experienced
trebles and three are junior trebles. The music sung is diverse, ranging
from Tudor through to 20th Century compositions. The choir is affiliated
to The Royal School of Church
Music (RSCM). In conjunction with the RSCM "Voice for Life"
scheme all eight experienced trebles studied for, and achieved in September
2006, their Bishop's Awards at their appropriate individual level. The Choir
owes a huge debt of gratitude to the past Director of Music, Ralph Franklin,
for the time he gave in helping these trebles to achieve their awards. Subsequently,
in September 2007, five of these trebles achieved their Silver awards under
the same scheme. In this case, the Choir owes similar gratitude to the present
Director, David Rance, for the time given in helping these trebles achieve
their passes, and, in one case, a distinction.
As well as its singing activities, the choir enjoys a number of social activities including an annual dinner, curry evenings and, for the trebles, events such as going swimming or bowling and visiting theme parks. The Choir's main task is helping to lead the worship of the Parish of All Saints. Please follow this link to see the main Choral Services for 2008. However, the Choir is also privileged to be able to take its music outside the Parish. This year the Choir is being allowed to sing at Portsmouth Cathedral, All Saints' Parish Church Ryde IOW, Edington Priory, Greyfriars' Church, Reading, and Romsey Abbey. For singing dates please follow this link. Last year, we were privileged to sing at Chester Cathedral (staying at The Retreat House) (23 - 29 July 2007). In 2006, we sang at Sherborne Abbey (staying at Sherborne School for Girls) (28 - 30 July 2006). Under the previous Director of Music, the Choir began an additional series of day visits to Cathedrals by singing at Coventry in February 2005. In 2006, we sang at St George's Chapel, Windsor (18 March 2006) , St Paul's Cathedral (29 April), Coventry again (17 June), and Guildford (7 October). Last year, we sang at Christchurch Priory (23 June), at Greyfriars Church, Reading (15 July), and at Southwark Cathedral (6 October). Before 2006 we sang at Tewkesbury Abbey
for a long weekend (29 - 31 July 2005), and at Bury
St. Edmunds (2004), and Brecon Cathedral
(2003). Each of the latter was for a week, and these links offer photos,
the music list, a poem and memories of the Choir's visits. |
